Frequently Asked Questions

What is Orizon and what is its relationship with OREF?

Orizon is a venture fund created in partnership with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and designed to support the acceleration to market of innovations derived from OREF-funded research. Orizon remains separate from OREF, but through this partnership, it will evaluate innovations funded by OREF and work with selected OREF Grant Recipients to bring their technologies to market.

Who is eligible for consideration for funding through Orizon?

Anyone who has received and completed an OREF research grant may apply to this program. Orizon’s Management will conduct a preliminary review of the innovation. Management will work with applicants to evaluate their innovation’s stage of development and if warranted, complete a business plan for presentation to Orizon’s Investment Committee. Selected innovations will be funded and supported through operations as a stand-alone company.

Should my innovation be selected, what is my time commitment and ownership in the created company?

In addition to financial support, Orizon will provide operational support through service providers in product development, regulatory affairs, healthcare reimbursement and other areas. Innovator time commitments will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The equity provided to the Innovator will be negotiated with Orizon based on the level of development of the innovation at the time of selection.

How does this program differ from OREF’s grant programs?

The Orizon fund and OREF’s research grants program are separate programs. To participate in the Orizon Fund program, you must have received and completed an OREF-funded research grant that directly resulted in or provided data to support your innovation.
